Potholes occur when water seeps into pavement through unsealed or improperly sealed cracks. When water freezes, it expands and enlarges the crack. When ice under the pavement melts, a void is left. Surrounding pavement falls into the void and forms a pothole.
Other times, potholes are created simply from high traffic flow and a weakness in the asphalt and/or the base.
Having a proper assessment performed to identify all potholes (as well as cracks that are becoming potholes) will be most cost-efficient choice until the long-term solution can be put in place.
